Auctionimage border 2px solid #ffffff. A truly superb ww1 field instrument used by the royal artillery, thsi instrument is called a 'clinometer' it is made of solid brass that has been plated and blackened in places to highlight the different gages and dials. This oen has the maker's mark of siemens brothers & co ltd of london and it is marked with the broad arrow or crow's foot and dated 1917.
I have taken many detailed pictures, so please refer ot the photos for an accurate description, but as far as i can find out, this piece of equipment was used to orientate the big field guns. During ww1 the use of heavier and more powerful guns were being developed in force, large guns that stand far behind the front line have fire on a target they can not see, aiming these guns means aiming the guns with the required elevation, angle etc and this instrument is used to do this, measuring distance, trajectory and minutes enabling accurate firing. The exact workings of this instrument, to be honest is a bit over my head but i have found quite a few web sites on line that can explain how it works with more detail than i ever can, so why not give it a google. This piece is beautifully made, all movign parts are as free moving as the day it was made, it measures 6 inches at the base and it stands 5.75 inches tall and as far as i can tell nothing is missing and it is in perfect condition. Please see pictures and judge for yourself the condition, as it seems what is good condition to one, is poor condition ot another. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have within 24 hours from the end of auction.
